FAQ

Helpful Information

QUESTIONS:

We have answered some common questions briefly; for much more information, please call us or visit PTG.org

-How often should my piano be serviced? Once a year is usually sufficient.

-Should I use an Registered Piano Technician (RPT) to service my piano? YES! This is one thing that separates the technician that is fully trained vs. someone that just decided to call themselves a tuner with little or no training.

-What is voicing? This is the process of adjusting the density of the felts covering the hammers striking the string to produce a warmer or brighter tone.

-What is regulation? Regulation is the adjustment of the mechanical aspects of the pianos to compensate for the effects of wear, the compacting and settling of cloth, felt, and buckskin, as well as dimensional changes in wood and wool parts due to changes in humidity.

-How do I clean my piano? Clean keys by occasionally wiping them with a damp cloth and drying them immediately.

-How do I select a piano? My child is just starting out, isn't this free piano good enough? Buy the best piano you can afford. Have a piano technician evaluate a piano before you buy & move it. Generally free pianos need a substantial amount of work.

-What is humidity control & do I need it? Piano humidity control systems are the best way to protect your piano by reducing the fluctuations in humidity levels around your piano. Changes in humidity are one of the most damaging influences on pianos.
